Western & Central Africa
Benin, a coastal country in West Africa, experiences recurrent floods in addition to droughts and strong winds. Benin is also vulnerable to technological disasters and industrial pollution due to its commercial activity entailing international transport and port areas. Climate change is expected to dramatically increase the intensity and occurrence of extreme climatic events like heavy rains, storms, drought, as well as rainfall variability and coastal erosion.
In 2015, the Government mobilized the CADRI Partnership to facilitate an assessment of disaster risk reduction capacities. The diagnosis puts a special emphasis on land use planning and natural resource management – forest, land, water and coastal zone – and covers six other socio-economic sectors: agriculture and food security, nutrition, health, WASH, education and social protection.
