Lao People’s Democratic Republic (PDR) is exposed to high climate and disaster risks. Droughts, floods, and storms are the most prevalent hazards, and are expected to become more severe with climate change. The country is also exposed to a range of hazards, including typhoons, floods, landslides, droughts, strong winds, as well as small scale earthquakes in the northern parts of the country. Other types of disasters include the consequences of technological hazards such as dam failure and industrial contamination accidents.
In May 2019, the Government through the Resident Coordinator requested to mobilize CADRI expertise to facilitate a multi-sectoral disaster risk reduction capacity diagnosis. In October 2019, CADRI facilitated a scoping mission to better understand the expectations of the Government & the UN Country Team and obtain guidance to contextualize the CADRI assessment and prioritization methodology.
